Shabba calls for Komphela to stay at Chiefs

Shabba on Komphela

Siphiwe Tshabalala hopes that coach Steve Komphela will remain at Kaizer Chiefs and is hoping to remedy his tainted tenure by winning a trophy this season.

The Soweto giants are seven points adrift of table-toppers, Mamelodi Sundowns and have been drawn to face First Division outfit Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup last 16 after sweeping aside Golden Arrows 3-0.

With the pressure mounting for Komphela to deliver his first trophy at the club, Tshabalala is confident of Amakhosi’s chances of ending their trophy drought.

‘We’re heading in the right direction with the squad that we have – a mixture of experience and a lot of youth,’ he told kickoff.

‘There’s a bright future in the team, looking at the long-term, but what also matters is here and now, and the situation we’re currently facing – to win games and trophies.

‘Hence I say, we’re not there yet and we are a work in progress, but we still have a chance to bring silverware through the Nedbank Cup and the league.

‘With regards to the coach being here, I think he’s done well in terms of trying to bring the team together, and promoting and giving youngsters an opportunity.

‘Sadly he will be judged on trophies but, us as a team, we see what he’s doing and his vision.

‘So, it’s us who have to buy into that and turn the hard work that he’s put in into rewards, by winning the league or the Nedbank Cup,’ he concluded.
