• Wits out to break Bethlehem curse

    Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says his team will head into their Absa Premiership tie against Free State Stars full of confidence, despite their dismal away record against El La Koto.

The Clever Boys find themselves in pole position to secure their maiden league title as they sit at the summit of the log standings, with three games left to be played.

Despite their three-point advantage over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, Hunt is wary of the threat that Serame Letsoaka’s side possess to their title charge.

Hunt’s charges have not garnered a victory in Bethlehem in four years and coupled with the fact that that they are ensued in a relegation-battle, the former SuperSport United mentor knows his team will have their work cut out for them.

“It has never been kind to us, but maybe it is our time now,” he told reporters. “We will go there with a positive frame of mind. They are a hard side to play against there.

“They are fighting for their lives and we are fighting on the other side of the table. We are under no illusion what to expect there. I have been going there for 35 years; I know what it’s like,” he added.

Hunt suggested that he would not release U20 internationals Phakamani Mahlambi and Reeve Frolser for the national team, who are departing for  South Korea to compete in the U20 World Cup.

“We have a big game on Wednesday and another big game next week [against Polokwane City]

“We have three big games coming up. It’s in our hands. But we have to be careful. We have to enjoy it. That’s the most important thing.

“I have been in these situations [before]. If you don’t enjoy it, it becomes a grind. We know that we have three huge games,” he concluded.

Wednesday’s match kicks off at 19:30 at the Bidvest Stadium.
