With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Sundowns grabbed the lead when Themba Zwane struck a superb curling effort to from the top corner from 20 yards out.
The Brazilians then doubled their lead through a penalty after Yannick Zakri was brought down by Tapuwa Kapini and Thabo Nthethe stepped up and converted from the spot-kick.
Highlands pulled a goal back in the 44th minute when Seun Ledwaba made his way into the area before cleverly slotted the ball past Denis Onyango from a tight angle.
However, Mothobi Mvala claimed a late goal in stoppage-time to help his side share the spoils with Sundowns, but it was enough to save the Lions of the North from being relegated.
