    Komphela: Why Chiefs stumbled in the league

    Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has highlighted the reasons for his team’s collapse towards the end of the 2016-17 Absa Premiership campaign.

    Chiefs emerged as one of the four title contenders after a good string of results saw them embark on a 12-match unbeaten streak in the league, but Komphela’s men stumbled at the last hurdle, winning only one of the last six league encounters and condemning them to a fourth-place finish.

    Komphela, who previously stated that Chiefs deserved better after his second trophyless season at the helm of the club, said that the Soweto giants’ biggest downfall was their inability to bounce back from their slump.

    When quizzed about what led to the setback, the former Maritzburg United mentor cited injuries and suspensions.

    “It’s a combination of factors, like injuries and suspensions, which affects your consistency in selection,” he told Chiefs’ website.

    “As a result, the team’s performance gets affected as well. Another consideration is fatigue, either mental or physical.

    “The most obvious was our inability to quickly bounce back after a setback. We needed to recover faster after the penalties knockout against SuperSport United,” he concluded.

    Chiefs collected six points from a possible 18 in the final stretch of the title race.
