• We can’t take Leopards lightly – Benni

    CT City coach Benni McCarthy

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy wants his side to bring their winning mentality into their Absa Premiership encounter against Black Leopards on Sunday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The Citizens will go into their next Absa Premiership clash off the back of a comfortable 3-0 victory over AmaZulu in their previous league encounter.

The victory saw City move up to 11th on the Absa Premiership standings with 10 points after nine games played so far this campaign.

McCarthy admits that he has been impressed with Leopards’ form and success in the league following their showing against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.

‘[Black Leopards’ defeat to Kaizer Chiefs] gave us a good indication of what we are up against,’ McCarthy said.

‘It’s a newly promoted team and they certainly haven’t disappointed themselves this season in the PSL.

‘They are a hardworking team and pretty sound technically. They can cause a lot of problems if we are not organised or compact. If we take it too lightly that they are a newly promoted team, you would think it’s a given that we will get three points without having to do our homework, without having to work hard.’

He added: ‘I think we are going to come out second best and we are going to disappoint ourselves, especially now that we on a good roll.’

The City mentor believes doing the ‘fundamentals’ against Leopards will play a huge role in helping them claim three points on Sunday.

‘We had a fantastic game against AmaZulu because everything went according to plan. We played what we see every day here in training and then we eventually managed to score more than one goal in a game,’ Benni said.

‘We’ve been brilliant and now we want to continue that mindset that we had against AmaZulu, and take it to Black Leopards.

‘I think if we are at our best, you can almost clearly say that this should be the guaranteed game, the game where we do the fundamentals and work as hard as they do to pick up three points,’ he concluded.

Cape Town City will welcome Black Leopards to Cape Town Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Sunday with kick-off set for 3:30pm.
