• Afcon Wrap: African giants qualify in style

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations after a 1-1 draw with Burundi, while African giants Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Ghana wrapped up qualifying in style.

    Burundi 1-1 Gabon

    Burundi concluded a historic qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against Gabon on Saturday afternoon to seal their spot in this year’s tournament, while Gabon, who hosted the last edition, failed to qualify.

    The visitors may have taken the lead through a Omar Ngando own-goal but Cedric Amassi found the all important equaliser in the first half.

    Cameroon 3-0 Comoros

    Cameroon wrapped up their Afcon qualifying campaign by securing their spot at the finals with an impressive 3-0 win over Comoros in Yaounde.

    The home side cruised to the big victory with goals from Eric Choupo-Moting, Christian Bassogog and Clinton N’Jie.

    Niger 1-1 Egypt

    Egypt, who have already qualified as hosts for the tournament, named an experimental side for Saturdays 1-1 draw with Niger.

    The Pharos grabbed an early lead through Trzequer but the home side fought back with a goal from Amadou Moutari to earn a draw which saw Egypt finish second, behind Tunisia, in the qualifying group.

    Zambia 4-1 Namibia

    A forgettable qualifying campaign for Zambian ended on a positive note with a big 4-1 win over Nambia in Lusaka.

    Orlando Pirates striker Augustine Mulenga bagged a brace along with goals from Donashano Malama and Lazarus Kambole completed the rout, while Peter Shalulile found the consolation for Namibia, who advance to the tournament despite the loss.

    Guinea-Bissau 2-2 Mozambique

    Mozambique failed to secure qualification for the 2019 Afcon ended their qualification campaign with a 2-2 draw against Guinea-Bissau who sealed their spot at Afcon 2019 with the result.

    The vistors drew first blood as Piqueti fired them ahead in the first half

    Guinea hit back with efforts from Nelson and Stanley Ratifo before Nelson propped up late to force a share of the spoils.

    Ivory Coast 3-0 Rwanda

    Ivory Coast, who had already qualified for the Afcon finals, ended their qualification campaign with a 3-0 victory over Rwana at the Felix Houphounet Stadium.

    Goals from Nicolas Pepe. Eric Bailly and Maxwell Cornet saw the Elephants finish second Group E.

    Ghana 1-0 Kenya

    Ghana sealed top spot in Group F with a tight 1-0 win over Kenya at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday.

    Jeffrey Schlupp found the all important as Kenya also qualified for the tournament in second place.

    Senegal 2-0 Madagascar

    Senegal had already sealed top spot in the group before the encounter, continued to impress with a compftrable victory over Madagscar.

    A brace from M’Biaye Niang led the West Africans to the victory while Madagascar still qualified for the continental finals after finishing as runners-up in Group A.
